Export at
1200px
Set width in the email to
600px
1200px is wider than Klaviyo's recommended 1,000px maximum. 1.5× (900px) stays sharp on most phones and within the range.

Why export at 1.5× or 2×
Most phones have high-density screens that use several physical pixels for each pixel of layout. An image exported at exactly 600px for a 600px slot looks slightly soft on them. Klaviyo's own suggestion is the standard fix:
The catch is that a full-width image at 2× is 1,200px wide, past Klaviyo's 1,000px guideline, and about four times the pixels of a 1× image, so the file grows. The calculator suggests 1.5× as a middle ground: 900px for a 600px slot stays inside the range while still looking sharp on most phones. That's our recommendation, not a Klaviyo rule; use 2× for small images like logos and icons, where the file stays small anyway.
Tall images: slice them
A long design exported as one image quickly passes 2,000px. Cutting it into horizontal slices keeps each image within the guideline, lets each part link somewhere different, and lets the first slices load while the rest are still coming in.
If you're also watching the email's code size, our Gmail clipping checker shows how close an email is to the 102 KB limit (image files don't count toward it).
Frequently asked questions
What size should email images be?+
For a full-width image in a standard 600px email, Klaviyo recommends 600 to 1,000 pixels wide and under 2,000 pixels tall, at 1 MB or less. Export at 1.5× (900px) or 2× (1,200px) of the display width for sharp results on high-density screens.
Why export images larger than they display?+
Phones and many laptops have screens that pack two or more pixels into each display pixel. An image exported at exactly its display size looks soft on them; exporting larger and setting the display width in the email keeps it sharp.
Should I use PNG or JPEG?+
Klaviyo says PNG generally displays best across devices, especially for images with text in them. Photos are usually much smaller as JPEG, which helps keep each image under the 1 MB recommendation.
